Damiana was first used by the Mayans in the treatment of dizziness and loss of balance. Its main application of the last century was an aphrodisiac, a feature that has been described in scientific literature from 100 years ago.
The main functions for Damiana now extends to central nervous system (CNS) depressants, and its quinone arbutin helps in antibacterial activity. Damiana is available in capsules, powder, tea and tincture.
Damiana Extract
Reported use
Damiana is used primarily for its aphrodisiac effects, for prophylaxis and treatment of sexual disorders. It is also used to treat enuresis, depression, constipation, dyspepsia and nervousness, it primarily now maintains physical and mental wellness of its user.
Damiana is boiled in water and the steam inhaled is used to relieve headaches. There are also a number of reports of recreational use of hallucinogenic and euphoric effects.
Daily dosage:
Extract: 2 to 4 ml by mouth three times a day
Capsules: 2 to 4 g by mouth three times daily
Tea: 1 cup (2 to 4 g) 5 oz (150 m) with boiling water, orally, three times a day.
Risks:
Damiana side effects include insomnia, headache, hallucinations, irritation of the urethral mucosa and liver damage. It might also help to cause diabetes.
Pregnant or lactating women should not use these herbs, because the consequences are unknown as yet.
Clinical considerations:
If more than 7 ounces (198 g) of the extract is consumed, it may result in paroxysmal convulsions.
Diabetics should discuss the use of Damiana with a health care provider before trying it out. Doctors need to closely monitor the glucose level in diabetic patients with Damiana so that tips may be given for diabetics. Blood glucose monitoring and periodic reporting of changes are better suited in the health care provider facilities. Monitor liver function if necessary.
Assess the substance of each patient that supposedly had induced hallucinations.
Counsel pregnant women, infants and the elderly to avoid the use of this service due to lack of sufficient information on their safety.

Tell patients to remind pharmacist that they are taking herbal substances to get a more accurate prescription.
Advise patients to consult their health care provider before undergoing any weight loss program.
